The Gavel is now accepting submissions for publication in our 2023 Issue (Volume VI)!

Theme

Trending issues that impact the legal landscape of the Asia-Pacific.

Submission requirement

All submissions must have an explicit discussion of laws or legal policies in Asia Pacific region. Articles offering a comparative analysis with regard to other jurisdictions are welcomed. While The Gavel is more inclined to accept articles, alternative forms of submissions may be accepted on the basis of their quality, relevance and and compatibility with the theme of The Gavel.

Alternative forms may include, but are not limited to:
  • case notes,
  • literature review,
  • modified assignments,
  • news commentaries, or
  • opinion pieces.

We welcome submissions from graduates and other institutions.

Outline and review process

Prior to your submission, you may want to provide an outline of no more than 500 words including the structure, content and references of your submission. An outline is not compulsory but is encouraged. The purpose is to ensure your work aligns with our publication guidelines and to improve the prospect of your work to be published on The Gavel. Feedback on outline will be returned as early as practicable.

We review submissions on a rolling basis, so early submissions are strongly encouraged. All submissions will go through a double-blind peer review process with the input from the Editorial Advisory Board. That means the identities of both reviewers and authors are concealed from each other throughout the review process. If the Editorial Team decides not to publish your submission, you will be advised in writing.

The Editorial Team is responsible for the design of The Gavel, but contributors are free to include any image in their submissions.

Deadlines

The deadline for final submissions is on 31 August 2023. The deadline for outline is on 10 August 2023. If you cannot meet the deadline due to special circumstances, please write to us as soon as possible. Leniency will be given on a case-by-case basis.

Formatting and style

Submissions should:

  • maintain a word count between 2,000 - 10,000 words (including bibliography and footnotes);
  • include author name/s, with a footnote giving the present position and education history;
  • strictly conform to AGLC 4th edition;
  • not use 'ibid' or 'above n' , as full citations must be used for ease of editing; and
  • be submitted in Word Document to thegavel@usyd-clss.com with the subject line as: Gavel Submission - [Name] - [University].

Author's agreement

By submitting your work to the Gavel, you warrant that:

  • your submission is your own original work;
  • your submission has not been and will not be published elsewhere (where an abridged or substantially modified submission may be exempted on a case-by-case basis);
  • you have conformed to the AGLC 4th edition; and
  • you have granted The Gavel Editorial Board a permanent, irrevocable and royalty-free license to use, modify, reproduce and redistribute your work.

USYD Chinese Law Students Society acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land, the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation.

The University of Sydney is on the sovereign land of these people. As students, we recognise our complicity in the ongoing colonisation of Indigenous land. In recognition of our privilege, we vow to not only include, but to prioritise and centre the experiences of Indigenous people, and to be reflective when we fail to be a counterpoint to the racism that plagues the mainstream media.
